MUSKOGEE, OK – During the month of August it is normal for those in Washington, D.C., who are elected, to come back to their home towns and hold town hall meetings. And this year it is no different.
Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) during this recess has five town halls scheduled. One of Coburn’s constituents, Peggy Burgess, shared her observations of the meeting that took place at the Muskogee Civic Center on Wednesday night.
“Sen. Coburn is in favor of defunding Obamacare, but he does not support the political tactic being promoted by the Heritage Foundation, Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Mike Lee (R-UT). They want to attach a defunding amendment to the continuing resolution that funds the federal government,” Burgess said. “Sen. Coburn opposes this tactic because he says the bill will either be defeated in the Senate, and bog down with no resolution, causing a shutdown of the federal government; or, if by some miracle, it passes the Senate, the President will veto it which will also cause a government shutdown. Once the federal government is shut down, the overwhelmingly liberal media will cry nonstop that the government shutdown is totally the Republicans’ fault. Weak-kneed Republicans will then cave and pass a fully funded continuing resolution. Once again, Republicans will look like idiots.”
The plan that Coburn is referring to is one that Senators Lee, Cruz, and several others that will vote to approve a Continuing Resolution as long as it has no funding for the Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare. They make the point that the President has already postponed 3 components of the law for a year. And the administration has missed 41 deadlines out of 82. So since the law is not ready to be implemented then delay it by defunding the law.
Coburn says that tying the defunding of Obamacare to the Continuing Resolution would be “childish” and “intellectually dishonest.”
“I am 100 percent convinced it won’t work,” Coburn said.
Burgess said, “Sen. Coburn would be in favor of attaching the Obamacare defunding amendment to the debt-ceiling bill which will come up in October. He says this tactic is better legally for the spending process. Failure to pass a debt ceiling increase will only cause the government to limit spending to money coming in. This tactic will not cause a complete government shutdown. Citizens should be able to understand the concept of only spending money the government has in the bank.”

A few others subjects were also addressed by Coburn. After reading a book titled “The Liberty Amendments” by Mark Levin a radio talk show host, Coburn stated, “I used to have a great fear of constitutional conventions…now I have a great fear now of not having one.”
“I’m afraid not to have a constitutional convention. I don’t think we have time to wait. I think Mark Levin has done a great service to this country by raising those issues. Now, he’s pretty harsh sometimes, but the fact is we have real problems and we need real solutions. And that’s one and no one else has offered anything that comes close to it.” Coburn stated after talking about the nations debt.
Coburn also went into some details about the debt “We are at $17 Trillion in debt now, in 10 years we will be at $30 Trillion…our historic is about 5.89%, and we’re paying about 1.35% right now. Instead of $233 Billion dollars in interest cost a year, we’d have a Trillion dollars in interest costs a year. And that’s a Trillion dollars that you’re not going to pay. Your kids are not going to pay it. How they are going to pay it is through a markedly decreased standard of living. The inability to purchase a home, the inability to send your kids to college. That’s what’s going to happen.”
The Jr. Senator from Oklahoma also stated that the 30 year projections of spending and the 30 year projections of revenue show us our government is totally unsustainable.
